Pharmacy automation in China addresses three operational layers of hospital pharmacy workflow. Outpatient dispensing automation — Kangchi, Kufaka, HongFengShu, integrated smart pharmacy systems — handles the high-volume tablet and package dispensing that drives patient wait times in tertiary hospitals. Inpatient medication management uses smart cabinets and controlled-access robotic systems (Nubomed, Smart Medication Cabinet, PillPick Octave) to tighten audit trail and reduce diversion in wards. IV admixture compounding — the PIVAS segment — uses enclosed robotic systems (Broadcare tabletop and integrated, AnzhiZhuo, iDolphin, PIVAS platforms) to prepare hazardous and non-hazardous IV medications in a controlled environment.

The IV compounding segment is particularly active because of NMPA requirements for aseptic preparation of cytotoxic and high-risk IV medications, combined with labor shortage and safety concerns around manual pharmacy compounding of hazardous drugs. Leading tertiary hospitals have moved to fully-automated PIVAS rooms over the last five years.

Regulatory pathways differ sharply within the segment. Clinical IV compounding robots fall under NMPA Class II with specific containment and sterility validation requirements. Dispensing systems are often classified as non-medical equipment depending on handling scope. For international automation vendors, the Chinese hospital market is characterized by large single-site procurement (tertiary hospitals with >2000 beds) and integration with domestic HIS/pharmacy IT systems.
